When you factory reset your iRobot Roomba vacuum, you’ll wipe out all of its data. Sometimes this is an essential step when you are troubleshooting an issue, but hopefully it can be avoided. When To Reboot A Roomba?

Giving your Roomba a reboot is a good first step if you have any of the following issues:

  • Roomba error messages
  • Unexpected Roomba behavior
  • Problems with WiFi connection

If the issues persist after the reboot, you may want to consider contacting Customer Support to see if there may be an alternative before you attempt a reset.

Can You Use The Roomba Smartphone App To Reboot Your Vacuum?

Some iRobot Roomba vacuums have WiFi connection capabilities and can pair with your phone through the Roomba app. While the app can be used to reset a Roomba, you cannot use it to reboot your vacuum. You’ll have to do that manually following the steps below for your specific model.

How To Reboot / Restart Every Roomba model

i7 or i3

To reboot your Roomba i7 or i3, press and hold the CLEAN button for 20 seconds. When the time has passed, let go of the button. The light ring will be white and will swirl in a clockwise direction. The swirling will continue while the rebooting is in process. It can take up to a minute and a half. When the restart is done, the light will turn off and the Roomba will turn on.

j7 or other j series models

To reboot your Roomba i7 or i3, press and hold the CLEAN button for 10 seconds. When the time has passed, let go of the button. The light ring will be white and will swirl in a clockwise direction. The swirling will continue while the rebooting is in process. It can take up to a minute and a half. When the restart is done, the light will turn off and the Roomba will turn on.

s9 and other s series models

To reboot your Roomba s series vacuum, press and hold the CLEAN button for 20 seconds. When the time has passed, let go of the button. You should see a white light ring around the bin lid that will swirl in a clockwise direction. The swirling will continue while the rebooting is in process. It can take up to a minute and a half. When the restart is done, the light will turn off.

500, 700, 800 or 900 Series WiFi Connected Models

Press and hold the Home button and the Spot Clean buttons together for 10 seconds. The Home button is the house icon. The Spot Clean button looks like a cross hair target. When you release the buttons, you should hear a reboot tone and the vacuum will restart.

801 Model (not WiFi connected)

Press and hold the clean button to turn the vacuum off. Press it again to turn it on again.

e5 or e6

Press and hold the Home button and the Spot Clean buttons together for 10 seconds. The Home button is the house icon. The Spot Clean button looks like a cross hair target. When you release the buttons, you should hear a reboot tone and the vacuum will restart.

600 Models

There are two different ways to go about a Roomba reboot depending on which 600 model you have. The way to know is to remove the dust bin and flip your Roomba over. If you see a green dot on the underside, you will need to remove the battery in order to initiate a reboot. Follow the steps in this video.

If your Roomba 600 model does not have a green dot, then replace the dust bin and press the Home button and the Spot Clean buttons together for 10 seconds. The Home button is the house icon. The Spot Clean button looks like a cross hair target. When you release the buttons, you should hear a reboot tone and the vacuum will restart.
