How To Deep Clean A Cloudy Vitamix Blender In 3 Easy Steps (Vinegar, Baking Soda, Bleach)
If you are like me, you like your small kitchen appliances to always look their best, especially when they are premium ones like a Vitamix blender. Unfortunately, Vitamix containers, like any blender, can turn cloudy over time. While completely normal and nothing to be concerned about, it can be annoying to look at. White vinegar, baking soda and bleach can be used to deep clean your Vitamix blender container and remove those cloudy white mineral stains.
Why Is My Vitamix Blender Cloudy?
Even if you regularly clean your Vitamix with warm soapy water, you may notice that a white film appears on the container and blades. Fortunately, it is nothing to be concerned about. The white film doesn’t mean that your Vitamix blender is dirty or permanently damaged. However, a cloudy Vitamix blender can be unpleasant to look at. I like to keep my small kitchen appliances looking like new!
The white film on your Vitamix blender may have one or two causes. Hard water is a common cause. Depending on where you live, your water may have higher levels of minerals. The higher the mineral content, the more likely the water is to leave stains on your blender. This is especially true if you don’t thoroughly dry your container after rinsing it. If you use your Vitamix to blend fruits and vegetables, these will also leave minerals behind that, over time, will cause the white film to appear.
Step 1: Clean Vitamix Blender Container With White Vinegar
I recommend that you start by trying to deep clean your Vitamix blender with vinegar. This “set it and forget it” approach to cleaning requires the least effort on your part and it may just do the trick! If not, you can proceed to steps 2 and/or 3.
To clean with vinegar, all you have to do is fill the Vitamix container with a 50-50 blend of white vinegar and clean water. Let is sit for several hours or overnight. When enough time has passed, pour out half of the vinegar-water mixture. With the half that remains in the container, put the lid on and run the blender at high speed for 30-60 seconds. FInally, dump out the water-vinegar mix, fill the Vitamix blender container with warm water and dish soap and run a self-cleaning cycle like you would after normal use.
Step 2: Clean Vitamix Blender Container With Baking Soda
Depending on how badly your Vitamix blender is stained, the vinegar approach may not be enough to deep clean and remove the white film. In that case, you will want to proceed to the next step, which involves scrubbing with a baking soda paste. The steps are very simple:
- In a small bowl, make a baking soda paste by mixing 3 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 cup of water.
- Use a soft-bristled brush or toothbrush to apply the baking soda paste to the inside of the Vitamix container. Scrub the container and the blades, focusing on the areas where there is visible white film.
- Let the baking soda paste sit for a few minutes to allow it to work on removing the stains.
- Once the cloudy areas have disappeared, fill the Vitamix blender container with warm water and dish soap and run a self-cleaning cycle like you would after normal use.
- Empty the container and rinse again with clean water. Carefully dry the container with a dish towel.
Step 3: Clean Vitamix Blender Container With Liquid Bleach
If your Vitamix blender is still cloudy after you’ve tried to deep clean with vinegar and baking soda, you can try using a bit of bleach. Just follow these steps:
- Fill the blender container about halfway with warm water.
- Add 1.5 teaspoons of liquid bleach to the container.
- Turn the Vitamix on and slowly increase speed to the highest setting. Let the blender run for 30-60 seconds.
- Dump out the bleach-water solution and rinse thoroughly.
- Fill the Vitamix blender container with warm water and dish soap and run a self-cleaning cycle like you would after normal use.
- Empty the container and rinse again with clean water. Carefully dry the container with a dish towel.
Tips To Keep Your Vitamix Container Looking Like New
Once you’ve restored your Vitamix blender container, you’ll want to take extra care to prevent minerals from building up again quickly. The best thing you can do to reduce the speed of mineral buildup is to use a dish towel to dry the interior and exterior of your container. After you’ve run a self-cleaning cycle and rinsed the container, lay it on its side and carefully wipe the inside and outside with a dry dish towel. Be sure to use caution because of the sharp blades! Leave the lid off the blender container so that it can continue to air dry once you place it upright.
